Improvements to Hill's Prescription Diets

30 Jun 2015

In July 2015, some Hill's Prescription Diets are improving with taste upgrades so your pet will enjoy them even more. Also, all prescription diets are getting shiney new packaging with clearer labelling. We are recommending a transition period for the foods with taste upgrades . The upgrades only apply to the DRY food (kibble). A transition period means mixing the old formula with the new for several days to assist the transition for your pet. Some pets on prescription diets have taste preferences or health issues where a slow transition improves food tolerance. We don't expect any issues…

Settling an Adult cat into a new household

16 Jan 2015

We got this email from a friend yesterday. Our response is below...... From: Chris Sent: Tuesday, 13 January 2015 8:15 a.m. To: [email protected] Subject: cat advice Hi David My friend has just inherited a 5 year old cat from across town. The cat has been in the house only 24 hours. It looks a little freaked out and miserable. Not himself. How long would you propose keeping the cat inside to lower the risk of him trying to scarper across town from the new house back ‘home’ to his old house? Thanks Chris To: Chris Subject: RE: cat advice Hi Chris Thanks for your question - it's a good one…

Leaders in NZ Pet Dental Care

01 Jan 2015

Did you know that around 70% of cats and dogs aged 3 and over have some sort of dental disease? We do, and we work hard to educate our clients about dental care. This month NZ Vet Association published results of a nationwide survey of veterinarians about the current level of dental care that is being offered to cats and dogs. It found: Only 53% of vets routinely perform nerve blocks prior to removing teeth Only 16% of vets regularly take x-rays of cats and dogs teeth Only 24% of vets would monitor a tooth that was broken, exposing the pulp canal and causing pain. 76% are unaware that there…

Anatomy of a Consult

At Tasman St Vet Centre we practice holistically. Not to be confused with practising 'alternative' therapies, holistic simply means that we consider all parts of your pet's life when we are providing veterinary care. Our clients come to us because we don't just treat symptoms, we find & treat the cause of those symptoms. In order to do this, we spend a large amount of time talking to our clients about all sort of facets of their pet's life. While most vet's 'normal' consults are 10 or 15 minutes long, in 2016 we made an official change to spend 30 minutes with our clients for many of our…

Dieting Dog

We recommend keeping your pet at a healthy weight, so we'll make dietary and lifestyle recommendations when we think it is necessary. Recently we saw Puma, a 3 year old german shepherd cross and recommended a revisit. Puma had been adopted as an adult by a long time client of ours. We'd heard Puma had some bad habits of helping herself, but this email conversation surprised even us. Hi Mr ____ You saw Dr Charlotte six months ago for Puma's lepto booster and she recommended a further 2kg weight loss and a weight check in six months. I understand from Puma's notes that she has eaten a…

Dogs and Chocolate (Chocolate Toxicity Calculator)

Hopefully by now most people are aware that chocolate is toxic for dogs. Use this calculator to help you in an emergency. Better still, have a little play with it now. (Dark chocolate is much worse for dogs than milk or white chocolate) Calculator provided by www.AskAVetQuestion.com.

Improvements in Record Keeping

We found some old records whilst cleaning out the clinic recently. They date back to 1979 and, incidentally, the client still brings her cat to Tasman St 35 years on. (Different cat though). It got me thinking about how improvements in technology help us provide better care for your pets. I'm not even talking about advances made in surgical and diagnostic equipment, even having a computer system allows us to keep better records and store more data. We're not getting at previous generations of vets by any means. The picture below is just one card - there are another 12 cards stapled to it…
