Did you know that around 70% of cats and dogs aged 3 and over have some sort of dental disease? We do, and we work hard to educate our clients about dental care.
This month NZ Vet Association published results of a nationwide survey of veterinarians about the current level of dental care that is being offered to cats and dogs.
It found:
Only 53% of vets routinely perform nerve blocks prior to removing teeth
Only 16% of vets regularly take x-rays of cats and dogs teeth
Only 24% of vets would monitor a tooth that was broken, exposing the pulp canal and causing pain.
76% are unaware that there are dental specialists who can perform root canals on teeth, instead of removing them if they are broken
Only 60% of vets believe that dental homecare is of benefit to cats and dogs
Here at Tasman St Vets we pride ourselves on offering a high standard of care.
We routinely take dental radiographs, place nerve blocks if we are removing a tooth and we offer referral for root canals if this is appropriate. We also offer several methods of dental homecare, and will discuss these with you to find the best method for you and your pet.
We are continually upskilling our vets in the latest dental techniques and investing in the best equipment.
It’s great to learn that we are among the leaders of veterinary dental care in New Zealand.
